On Sunday evening, hundreds of Catholics gathered in Paris’ central district VI this month again with a single demand: “Give us back masses!” Many prayed and sang psalms. Similar events were held in Bordeaux, Nantes, Strasbourg and several dozen other cities in France.
The reason for the current emotion-filled action was the restrictions imposed in the country a fortnight ago due to the current antique quarantine. By government decision, cathedrals and other places of worship remained open, but church services involving parishioners were banned. An exception was made for funeral ceremonies only, where no more than 30 people were allowed to attend.
As an alternative measure, the church members were asked to broadcast masses using social networks and other modern information opportunities. Many took advantage of this for lack of better, but quickly realized that nothing can replace the effect of direct participation in masses, the spiritual and religious unity of people within the sacred temple walls.
