On Monday night, the Paris police dismantled some 500 tents set up by migrants in Republic Square in protest against the dismantling of their camp in a suburb of the capital. This was reported by the Prefecture of Police.
“Today, a camp was illegally set up in Republic Square. The police have released this illegally occupied public space”, – the report says. – “The creation of such camps, organized with the support of associations, is unacceptable”, – stressed in the statement of the prefecture. According to non-governmental organisations, there were over 450 migrants in the square that evening.”
Earlier on Monday, associations Utopia 56 and Médecins du Monde called for the installation of tents in the Republic Square in connection with the fact that on November 17 in the capital suburb of Saint-Denis was dismantled camp, which, according to police estimates, lived about 4 thousand people. Most of the refugees were accommodated in temporary centres, while the fate of around 1,000 people remained unresolved.
In the run-up to the action, the organisers issued a statement calling on the authorities to “provide places for the immediate accommodation of these migrants and establish a system of permanent reception of refugees”.
