Former presidential candidate Svetlana Tikhanovskaya has asked the French National Assembly (lower house of parliament) to consider possible options for financial support in the event of a change in power. She appealed to this effect at a meeting of the Foreign Affairs Committee on Wednesday by video link.

“Already now we need to think about the assistance programme that may be provided to Belarus in the future. We can build a new country, it will be Belarus of the future, freedom, but we can’t do it without your support”, –  she said.

At the same time, the opposition politician called on France and other European countries to put maximum pressure on President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko. “Sanctions are very important, but they are not enough. It is necessary to completely deprive the regime of its support, in particular, by achieving the cessation of funding for law enforcement agencies in Belarus,” she said. – At the same time it is necessary to support independent mass media, civil, student organisations”.

“I ask the Belarusian authorities to hear the part of the Belarusian people who are against lies and violence. Help the Belarusian people to avoid violence and civil war. Help to overcome this crisis with dignity by holding the free and fair elections that the Belarusians deserve. There is no place for geopolitics in our struggle, we are fighting for the right of Belarusians to have free and fair elections”, –  said Tikhanovskaya.
