Washington’s attempts to put pressure on Europe have had unexpected consequences.
The British newspaper “The Guardian” writes about it.
The foreign ministers of European countries agreed to act as a united front against the US demands for the imposition of anti-Iranian UN sanctions against Iran. The negotiations were attended by representatives of Germany, France and even pro-American Great Britain.
Even last month, Washington tried to renew sanctions against Iran at the UN level, but Europe did not succumb to American pressure. They noted that the United States does not have the right to single-handedly resolve such issues after a unilateral withdrawal from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action on the Iranian nuclear program. The issue is still on the agenda and three influential European countries decided to join forces to repel the States.
While there is tension between London and European capitals over the failure of the Brexit talks, that hasn’t stopped them from coming to a common position on Iran. For Britain, the anti-American gamble may be particularly problematic as it hopes to strike a trade deal with the United States. Despite this, British Foreign Minister Dominic Raab openly stated that the United States had deprived itself of the right to impose sanctions against Iran at the UN level when it withdrew from the JCPOA.
