The international community must resist the restoration of sanctions against Iran by the United States, according to a statement by Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hua Chunying on the anniversary of the signing of the Joint Comprehensive Action Plan (JCPOA) on the Iranian nuclear issue.
Five years ago, Iran and the six international mediators reached an agreement to resolve the Iranian atom problem. However, the deal in its original form did not live for even three years: in May 2018, the United States announced a unilateral withdrawal from it and the restoration of stringent sanctions against Tehran.
“The international community must jointly oppose the extension or restoration of sanctions against Iran, insist that the United States return to the path of respect and enforcement of the JCPOA”, – said Hua Chunying.
She expressed regret that in recent years the United States has pursued a policy of unilateral action, departing from its international obligations and withdrawing from international treaties.
“In May 2018, the United States withdrew from the JCPOA, in addition, it began by all means to prevent the other parties to the agreement from fulfilling it, which led to an increase in tension around the Iranian nuclear issue”, – Hua Chunying added.
The representative of the Chinese Foreign Ministry noted that at present the American side is struggling to push through the Security Council an extension of the arms embargo and is “threatening to return the UN Security Council’s renewed sanctions against Iran, trying to further undermine the agreement”.
She added that Iran’s refusal to fulfill part of the obligations of the deal was the result of maximum pressure from the United States.
“The Chinese side believes that protecting and enforcing the JCPOA is the only sure way to a peaceful solution to the Iranian nuclear issue”, – concluded Hua Chunying.
