Greece threatens Turkey with sanctions over Hagia Sophia

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan made a “historical mistake” by turning Hagia Sophia from a museum into a mosque.

Such a statement on Saturday, July 11, made an official representative of the Greek government, Stelios Petsas, on the air of the Skai television channel.

“Erdogan made a historical mistake, a mistake leading to a break, which, I hope, will not be insurmountable”, – the official said.

He added that Greece condemned those actions and would do everything possible to have consequences for Turkey. Everything is on the table: and the possibility of sanctions, not only from Europe, but also from international organizations such as UNESCO.

As News Front previously reported, recently Turkish State Council has abolished a government decree on assigning the status of a museum to Hagia Sophia in Istanbul. Erdogan, in turn, signed a decree allowing Muslim prayers to be held in the cathedral.
