To resolve the situation in Libya, it is necessary to immediately cease hostilities, attempts by the parties to advance their forces in any direction, said Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.
“In practice, this can be realized only in one way – to immediately cease hostilities and stop attempts to advance both armed groups west and east in any direction. Unfortunately, all of our interlocutors have stated the obvious fact that there is no military solution to the Libyan conflict does not translate into practical matters”, – Lavrov said following talks with foreign ministers of the African Union troika (DRC, Egypt, South Africa) in a video communication format.
Lavrov noted that he supported the proposal of the speaker of the House of Representatives (Parliament) of Libya in the east of Libya, Akila Saleh, who spoke about the formation of collective, equal bodies of state power, in which, based on a balance of interests, all three historical regions of Libya would be represented.
“I believe that this is an absolutely reasonable proposal”, – the minister said.
In Libya, the confrontation continues between the Government of National Accord (GNA) Fayez Sarraj, which controls Tripoli and territories in the west of the country, and the LNA under the command of Marshal Khalifa Haftar, who collaborates with the parliament sitting in the east. GNA supports Turkey, and LNA – Egypt.
On 6 June, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi met with Haftar and Speaker of the House of Representatives (Parliament) Akila Saleh in Cairo, Libya. Following the meeting, the head of Egypt announced the “Cairo initiative”, which includes a ceasefire throughout Libya from June 8 and the terms of a political settlement. The initiative was supported by Russia, the United States and a number of Arab states, including Saudi Arabia and the UAE. Against were the GNA and Turkey.
