Russia and EU intend to ensure full implementation of nuclear deal with Iran, Lavrov says actions of the West are illegal

Russia and the EU intend to ensure the full implementation of the joint comprehensive plan for Iran’s nuclear program, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Tuesday after a telephone conversation with the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrel.

“Of course, we discussed in sufficient detail the situation surrounding the Iranian nuclear program. We emphasized our commitment – both to Russia and the EU – to ensure a sustainable and comprehensive implementation of the Joint Comprehensive Action Plan”, – Lavrov said.

He added that he and Borrell “exchanged assessments of the complex processes that are now developing in Vienna as part of the IAEA Board of Governors and in New York.

“Where our American colleagues are trying to promote solutions that fundamentally contradict all the agreements reached within the framework of the JCPOA, which were approved by the UN Security Council by resolution 2231”, – the minister said.

The conversation between Lavrov and Borrel took place after the visit of the Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif to Moscow on Tuesday. At a press conference following talks with his Iranian counterpart, Lavrov also spoke of “unscrupulous” steps towards Iran, which they are trying to take both within the framework of the IAEA and the UN.

“The latest report of the UN Secretary General Guterres on the situation surrounding resolution 2231 goes far beyond the authority of the UN Secretariat. The fact that this report, in fact, was immediately “leaked” to the Western press at the time of its publication, also raises many questions. By the way, the report of the IAEA Director General Grossi, which is now being discussed at a meeting of the Agency’s Board of Governors, was also absolutely illegally “leaked” into the public space”, – Lavrov said.

He stressed that he considers such actions to be aimed at creating artificial pretexts to justify illegal attacks on Iran.

“Those who are behind these actions, encourages and initiates them, behave unscrupulously and extremely dishonestly”, – the head of the Russian Foreign Ministry stated.
