France criticized US decision to resume death penalty

The representative of the French Foreign Ministry stated the country’s constant position against the death penalty “everywhere and under any circumstances”, commenting on the decisions of the US federal authorities, and called on all states applying this punishment to introduce a moratorium on it.

Earlier, the US Department of Justice said that the federal authorities plan to resume the death penalty in mid-July after an almost 20-year hiatus.

“France recalls its constant opposition to the death penalty everywhere and in any circumstances. It remains committed to the universal abolition of this unjust, inhuman and ineffective punishment”, – a representative of the French Foreign Ministry told the reporters.

“France calls on all states that still use the death penalty to introduce a moratorium with the expectation of permanent abolition of the death penalty”, – he stressed.
