Unknown people dyed a statue in honor of the abolition of slavery, installed in the city of Pau in southwestern France, the local publication Republique des Pyrenees reports.
The incident occurred on Thursday. As a result of the hooligan trick, the bust and the pedestal under it were flooded with white paint.
A can of paint was discovered about 10 meters from the monument. The scripture “White lives matter” was written on the packaging – by analogy with the slogan of the movement against racism “Black lives matter”, that broke out in many countries of the world.
A wave of protests and riots against police violence and racism after the death in Minneapolis during the detention of the African American George Floyd swept through the cities of the United States, and then to several countries of the world.
Several actions against racism and police violence have already taken place in Paris and other French cities, in particular, on June 2, about 20 thousand people took to the streets of the French capital. Some demonstrations were accompanied by riots and clashes with the police.
