In Lebanon, protesters staged a national currency funeral

The epidemic of coronavirus COVID-2019 severely hit the economy of almost all countries. Lebanon was seriously affected by it, where the population was faced with the depreciation of the local currency, unemployment and a 60% increase in prices for basic products.

Unable to tolerate further, thousands of people took to the streets, demanding that the authorities protect social rights and compensate for the losses due to the emergency measures taken by the government in March against the coronavirus.

This week in Lebanon, despite the quarantine declared in the country because of the coronavirus, mass protests took place.

The situation escalated on April 28 when a 26-year-old protester Fawaz al-Samman died during a confrontation with law enforcement. Arab News called the protests “a revolution of hungry people.”
