The League of Arab States called for an urgent meeting of Middle East mediators

The chances for peace between Palestinians and Israelis must be preserved, says the LAS statement.

The League of Arab States (LAS) on Thursday called on the “Quartet” of international mediators for the Middle East (EU, UN, Russia and the U.S.) to hold an urgent meeting to preserve the chances for peace between the Palestinians and Israelis. This was stated in the final statement of an extraordinary meeting of the Council of the League at the level of Arab Foreign Ministers, held by videoconference on the plans of Israel to annex part of the West Bank.

“We call on the “Quartet” of international mediators to hold an emergency meeting in order to preserve the chances for peace and political settlement based on the principle of dual statehood,” the document says. – The world community must take a position in accordance with international resolutions and decisions to continue the peace process, including the road map for a peaceful settlement and the Arab Peace Initiative, designed to compel the Israeli occupation authorities to end their colonial plans through annexation, settlement expansion and occupation that began in 1967″.

At the same time, Foreign Ministers called on the European Union to “bring pressure to bear on the occupying Government” to stop its plans. The League is convinced that the UN and the Council must also assume responsibility for preserving peace and security and preventing the implementation of Israeli plans that are contrary to international law and international resolutions. The Ministers also called on the US administration to “comply with the UN Charter and all international resolutions concerning the Middle East conflict.

“The implementation of Israeli plans to include any part of the Palestinian territories occupied in 1967, including the Jordan Valley and the North Dead Sea, as well as areas where Jewish settlements are located, is a new war crime and a flagrant violation of the UN Charter and resolutions and international law,” said the Council of the League. – “Arab countries will support, by political, diplomatic and legal means, any decision and steps of the State of Palestine to oppose these Israeli plans for annexation and colonial expansion.

Arab countries have also agreed to provide financial support to Palestine to oppose Israeli plans, as well as to fight the new coronavirus pandemic in the face of the difficult economic situation in the Palestinian territories.
