Expert comments on US expectations from continuation to put pressure on Iran

The United States is preparing to extend the arms embargo against Tehran or to renew tougher sanctions, the newspaper The New York Times writes, citing sources in the administration.

According to the publication, the US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is working on a plan according to which Washington will be able to take advantage of the situation from the nuclear deal with Iran, despite the fact that the United States officially withdrew from it in 2018.

According to a source, Russia and China may veto the decision to renew the arms embargo on Tehran. In response, Washington will recall formal participation in the agreement on the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), and then accuse Iran of violating the agreement. After that, the US authorities plan to renew more severe sanctions against Iran.

“We can’t allow the Islamic Republic of Iran to buy conventional weapons in six months. Previous President Barack Obama should never have agreed to end the UN embargo. We are ready to use all our diplomatic capabilities to ensure that the arms embargo remains in the Security Council of UN”, – Pompeo told the newspaper.

More stringent sanctions against Iran should come into force in the fall, when the first phase of the pandemic ends, the publication says.

Military politologist Andrey Koshkin commented on the actions of the United States.

“The United States continues to put pressure, and very actively, on the position of Iran in the Middle East. Iran fell into the most severe mites: on one hand, all kinds of sanctions imposed by the United States, and on the other hand, an excessively high degree of infection. In this situation, the United States continues to put pressure on Iran, hoping that a revolution breaks out inside that sweeps away the regime unwanted for the USA and pro-American managers come to power. But all the efforts of the USA, unfortunately for them, do not bring success”, – Andrei Koshkin said.

According to him, Iran has already demonstrated that it is ready to fight back the Americans.

“The incident that occurred earlier this year when the US President Donald Trump decided to destroy the third person in Iran Kassem Soleimani, and Teheran’s slap in the face showed strength of mind and Iran’s desire to stand up to equal USA. And the worst thing for the USA is that they unite states around themselves that are also dissatisfied with American politics. And, of course, the confrontation escalates”, –  he added.

Iran and the Six International Negotiators reached a historic agreement in July 2015 to resolve the long-standing problem of the Iranian atom. The months-long negotiations culminated in the adoption of a joint comprehensive plan of action, the implementation of which Iran and the “six” of international negotiators reached a historic agreement in July 2015 to resolve the multi-year problem of the Iranian atom.

The months-long negotiations culminated in the adoption of a joint comprehensive plan of action, the implementation of which will completely remove Iran’s previously imposed economic and financial sanctions by the UN Security Council, the United States and the European Union.

The agreement provided that the arms embargo will be lifted from Iran within 5 years, arms deliveries are possible earlier, but only with the permission of the UN Security Council. The deal in its original form did not survive even three years: in May 2018, the United States announced a unilateral withdrawal from it and the restoration of stringent sanctions against Tehran.
