Dozens of the US congressmen have approached senior officials in the Presidential Administration of Donald Trump, calling for suspension of economic sanctions against Iran, which, along with other states, is fighting to curb the coronavirus pandemic.
As News Front reports with reference to PressTV, a letter sent to the US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Treasury Secretary Stephen Mnuchin calls on the Trump Administration to provide humanitarian assistance, rather than worsen the situation.
“Instead of continuing to impose new sanctions during this tragic time for the Iranian people, we urge you to significantly suspend sanctions against Iran during the global emergency as a humanitarian gesture for the Iranian people to allow them to fight the virus more effectively”, – the letter says.
“In addition, we urge the United States to find a way to deliver aid directly to the Iranian people to support the Iranian people’s struggle with the coronavirus.
The US sanctions targeting the entire economy, which supports more than 80 million people, make it difficult for ordinary Iranians to get basic necessities, such as food and hygiene products, to contain the pandemic and survive, the message says.
