Marshal of the Libyan National Army (LNA) Khalifa Haftar informed French President Emanuel Macron of his readiness to sign a peace agreement with the Government of National Accord (GNA) of Libya, the pan-Arab newspaper al-Sharq al-Awsat reports.
A Libyan military source told RIA Novosti on Monday that Haftar had arrived in Paris on an official visit.
“Haftar informed Macron that he would sign a ceasefire agreement if the government of Faez al-Sarraj complied with it”, – the newspaper said, citing a source in the Macron administration.
After the overthrow and assassination of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011, Libya virtually ceased to function as a single state. Dual power reigns in the country now. The parliament elected by the people sits in the east, and in the west, in the capital Tripoli, the Government of National Accord, formed with the support of the UN and the European Union, rules. The authorities of the eastern part of the country operate independently of Tripoli and cooperate with the army of Marshal Khalifa Haftar.
