Germany will accept “especially needy” children from refugee camps on the Greek border

The leaders of the Christian Democratic (CDU) and the Social Democratic Party (SPD) of Germany agreed to accept children and adolescents from refugee camps on the border with Greece, who are in a “particularly vulnerable position”, according to the Die Zeit edition. It is talked about children in need of urgent treatment, and those who are unaccompanied and under 14 years of age.

“For us, order and humanity are one whole. That is why we want to support Greece in a difficult humanitarian situation, when there are about 1000-1500 children on the Greek islands”, – the parties said in a 14-page report from the meeting.

Negotiations of representatives of the CDU and the SPD lasted about seven hours. In particular, German Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU), Minister of Finance Olaf Scholz (SPD), Minister of Health Jens Span (CDU) and Minister of Foreign Affairs Heiko Maas (SPD) took part in them.

In late February 2020, amid an escalation of the situation around the Syrian province of Idlib, the Turkish authorities decided to open transit for refugees through their territory. Ankara estimates that there are 3.7 million refugees in Turkey and the country is unable to cope with the new wave of immigration. According to Ankara, more than 100 thousand migrants have already transferred from Turkey to the EU.

Brussels has already stated that the migration crisis developing on the Greek-Turkish border was provoked by Ankara for political purposes. In response, Turkey accused the EU of a hypocritical approach to the migration crisis. Today, the Turkish coast guard has banned refugees from crossing the sea border with Greece because of the danger of the route.
