Turkish security forces detained 12 people in the provinces of Karaman and Sakarya suspected of involvement in the Islamic State terrorist group.
As a result of the operation in the Sakarya province in northwestern Turkey, four Iraqi citizens were detained. Police suspect them of having links with ISIS, Anadolu reported.
According to the Hurriyet newspaper, eight out of 12 suspects were detained in a similar charge in the province of Karaman.
The Islamic State* arose in 2006 through the merger of a number of terrorist groups. Until 2013, the group was one of the rank-and-file Sunni autonomous armed groups and consisted of no more than four thousand people. The group became widely known in the summer of 2014, when militants launched a full-scale attack on the northern and western parts of Iraq.
ISIS gained the greatest strength during operations in Syria, where it fought against government forces.
