The US president proposed his own solution to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, which was immediately rejected by Palestine. This step by the United States could create additional tension in the Middle East, and this is commented on by the Russian expert Vladimir Fitin.
The US President Donald Trump announcea the “deal of a century” related to the Palestinian-Israeli settlement. In his opinion, the creation of two states is necessary: the Arab one with the capital in East Jerusalem and the Jewish one. At the same time, according to Trump, Jerusalem should remain an indivisible capital.
At the same time, it is unclear how such a plan can be implemented, Vladimir Fitin, an expert at the Russian Institute for Strategic Studies (RISS), told the reporters.
“What does it mean, the capital in East Jerusalem? How does this fit with the fact that Jerusalem is the single and indivisible capital of Israel? The Palestinian side did not participate in the negotiations or in the discussion, it rejects this option. The Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu welcomes such a decision by the Americans. He said that this is a possible fateful breakthrough and an opportunity for a final settlement. But nothing changes in accordance with this proposal. It can simply create additional tension Middle East protests cause of many of the Arab countries”, – said Vladimir Fitin.
The American leader said that Israel, agreeing to the terms of the deal, is taking a “giant step” towards peace. For the Palestinians, according to Trump, this would also be a historic opportunity.
However, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas rejected the US proposal, saying Jerusalem was not for sale.
“The deal of the century” will not go through, and our people will send it to the trash in history”, – Abbas said.
The fact that the Palestinians reject the deal, and this is what the head of the White House expects, experts had expected even before the announcement of the conditions.
In particular, the director of the Center for Military-Political Research at MGIMO, Doctor of Historical Sciences Alexei Podberezkin on the eve suggested that Trump would put conditions on the Palestinian side that she would not want and could not fulfill.
“And then Trump with a light heart will say that relations with Israel, which have always been a priority, will continue to develop”, – Alexei Podberezkin shared his opinion.
