An influential Shiite politician and religious leader Muktad al-Sadr called for a new protest against the United States, Al-Sumaria reported, citing a statement by the politician-led movement.
Last Friday at the call of al-Sadr in the Iraqi capital Baghdad, a major demonstration was held against the American presence in the country.
It is reported that the al-Sadr movement called for a protest rally against the US embassy in Baghdad on Sunday at the prayer venues.
The demonstrators in Iraq during the protests since the beginning of October last year demand the resignation of the government, the fight against corruption, unemployment, and better living conditions. As a result of clashes and riots accompanying the protest, according to Iraqi President Barham Saleh, more than 600 people were killed and about 50,000 were injured. These are the largest protests that have occurred in Iraq since the overthrow of Saddam Hussein in 2003.
