German Chancellor Angela Merkel will leave her post in 2021, but in the event of the dissolution of the government and early elections, this may happen earlier.
However, there is still no answer to the question of who will be her successor. This was told by German political scientist Alexander Rahr in a recent interview.
“Of course, everyone understands that in a sense, Merkel is indeed a“ lame duck. ” But on the other hand – and with whom to work now? After all, it is not clear who will replace her, ”the expert emphasized.
Rahr recalled that Merkel’s position was undermined back in 2015, during a massive influx of refugees from the Middle East.
As a result, he said, the Ukrainian problem, because of which five years ago Europe had almost entered a new phase of the Cold War with Russia, has faded into the background, since it is Moscow that can bring peace to the Middle East.
The political scientist added that the real disaster for German-Russian relations would be the coming to power of the Green Party, especially since all the politicians of the liberal camp are more oriented to the USA.
Berlin and Moscow should embark on constructive pragmatism and move away from ideology, this will clearly bring more positive to both sides than constant baseless confrontations.
