German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Chinese President Xi Jinping discussed the implementation of the results of the Berlin Conference on Libya, further support is promised in Beijing, the German cabinet said on Wednesday.
“Both sides discussed the implementation of the results of the Berlin conference on Libya held on January 19, 2020: President Xi promised his further support”, – the Ministry said.
In addition, Merkel and Xi Jinping talked about “political and economic relations between Germany and China, as well as issues of international trade”, the report said. Relations between the EU and China were also discussed.
An international conference on Libya was held in Berlin on January 19 with the participation of Russia, the USA, Turkey, Egypt and other countries, as well as the EU and the UN. The summit was also attended by the Prime Minister of the Government of National Accord (GNA) Fayez Sarraj and the commander of the Libyan National Army (LNA) Khalifa Haftar, although they failed to organize direct negotiations between them again.
Following the conference, a document was adopted on the “Practical Implementation of the Berlin Process by the United Nations Support Mission for Libya.” It describes the features of the implementation of decisions on six “baskets”, in particular, in the political sphere, in the sector of economics and finance, in the field of security, in compliance with the embargo on the supply of arms to Libya, and in the field of international humanitarian law and human rights.
The document says that the first step in the field of security involves the creation of the Joint Military Commission “5 + 5”, “consisting of regular members of the army and / or police under the auspices of the UN”. As the UN Secretary General Anthony Guterres noted, the military committee on the settlement in Libya will meet in Geneva in the next few days.
