The Libya conference in Berlin provides an opportunity to end the armed conflict in the country and reach the political settlement, said Turkish President’s Press Secretary Ibrahim Kalin.
The international conference on Libya was held in Berlin on Sunday with the participation of Russia, the USA, Turkey, Egypt and other countries, as well as the EU and the UN. The Prime Minister of the Government of National Accord (PNS) Fayez Sarraj and the commander of the Libyan National Army (KhLA) Khalifa Haftar were at the summit, although organization of direct negotiations between them failed again.
“The Berlin summit is an important opportunity for ending the conflict in Libya and for reaching the political settlement. The effective and multifaceted diplomatic activity of our President has made Turkey one of the key participants in the process”, – Kalyn wrote on Twitter.
After the overthrow and assassination of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011, Libya virtually ceased to function as a single state. Dual power reigns in the country now. The parliament elected by the people sits in the east, and in the west, in the capital Tripoli, the Government of National Accord, formed with the support of the UN and the European Union, rules. The authorities of the eastern part of the country operate independently of Tripoli and cooperate with the Libyan National Army of Marshal Khalifa Haftar.
