“Participation of the representatives of the opposing parties – the Head of the Libyan National Unity Government Fayez Sarraj and the Libyan National Army Marshal Khalifa Haftar in the negotiations in Berlin is a diplomatic victory for Russia. For the world community, the talks are an important signal of the lack of alternative political settlement of the situation in Libya”, – Zheleznyak told the reporters.
According to him, the key factor of stability in Libya should be the preservation of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the country under the auspices of the UN, as previously stated by the heads of Russia and Turkey.
“The creation of a military committee, the purpose of which, with the assistance of the UN, is to achieve a sustainable ceasefire in Libya, will allow the process of exchange of views between the parties to the conflict to start and further contribute to a complete cessation of bloodshed, restoration of peaceful life and building a rule of law. It is important that all participants in the meeting agree on one regarding compliance with the military embargo”, – the deputy stressed.
He added that Moscow is actively demonstrating its desire to help defuse tensions in the Middle East region.
After the overthrow and assassination of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011, Libya virtually ceased to function as a single state. Dual power reigns in the country now. The parliament elected by the people sits in the east, and in the west, in the capital Tripoli, the Government of National Accord, formed with the support of the UN and the European Union, rules. The authorities of the eastern part of the country operate independently of Tripoli and cooperate with the Libyan National Army of Marshal Khalifa Haftar.
