Lavrov: the final documents of the conference on Libya are almost agreed

The final documents of the conference on Libya in Berlin are almost agreed, acting Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Sergey Lavrov said on Friday.

“The Berlin Conference – we supported this initiative from the very beginning. Because the more countries will want to help the Libyans create the conditions for resolving this crisis, the better it will probably be… We took part in all five preparatory meetings. Final documents now, in my opinion, they’re practically agreed upon. They fully comply with the decisions adopted by the Security Council on the Libyan settlement, do not contain any provisions that contradict the decisions of the Security Council”, – Lavrov said at a press conference AI on the results of the activities of Russian diplomacy in 2019.

“The main thing now is that after the Berlin conference, if everything goes as planned, and the Security Council finally supports the Berlin conference, the main thing is that the Libyan parties do not repeat their past mistakes and still do not begin to put forward additional conditions, do not blame each other friend”, – he stressed.

Germany on Tuesday officially announced the holding of a conference on a settlement in Libya on January 19 in Berlin, representatives of Russia, the USA, Turkey, Egypt, the EU, the UN and other countries are invited to it. The GNA Prime Minister Fayez Sarraj and the Head of the Libyan National Army (LNA), Marshal Khalifa Haftar, announced that they would attend the Berlin conference.

The Berlin conference will be held after the inter-Libyan talks in Moscow with the participation of representatives of the Russian Federation and Turkey. Haftar left Moscow without signing a ceasefire agreement with the Tripoli government of Sarraj. The PNS delegation signed the agreement, and then went to Istanbul.

After the overthrow and assassination of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011, Libya virtually ceased to function as a single state. Dual power reigns in the country now. The parliament elected by the people sits in the east, and in the west, in the capital Tripoli, the Government of National Accord, formed with the support of the UN and the European Union, rules. The authorities of the eastern part of the country operate independently of Tripoli and cooperate with the Libyan National Army of Marshal Khalifa Haftar.
