A new wave of protests has overflown Iran after the Supreme Leader of the country admitted the fact that the Ukrainian Boeing had accidentally been shot down by the Iranian military, killing 167 onboard passengers, many of whom were Iranians.
Javad Zarif, the Iranian Foreign Minister, referred to the acccident as a result of “a human error” triggered by the “US adventurism”. Undoubtedly, Trump’s administration was to blame for escalation of tensions between the countries and in the Middle Eastern region as well, but it is not clear whether it is the only one to blame in this accident alone.
Protesters changed their common chants “Death to America” and started calling on Ayatollah Ali Khamenei to resign. Now they chant “Death to the Dictator” and “Death to the liar”. During one of the protests, demonstrators chanted, “Khamenei have shame. Leave the country”.
One of CNN analysts even drew an analogy between the Iranian mess and the explosion of Chernobyl the 1986 nuclear disaster in the Soviet Ukraine that “exposed all the incompetence, state deception and rot in that regime”.
But whether Iran’s grief and fury could lead to revolution is hard to tell.
