Russia and France intend to maintain the Joint Comprehensive Action Plan (JCPOA) on Iran’s nuclear weapons, French President Emmanuel Macron said after a telephone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin the day before, Reuters reports.
According to the Head of the Fifth Republic, after the adoption of the relevant decision, the leaders of Great Britain, France and Germany called on Iran to return to full compliance with the JCPOA.
In 2015, the United Kingdom, Germany, China, Russia, the United States, France and Iran announced the achievement of the JCPOA, which provides for the lifting of sanctions in exchange for limiting Iran’s nuclear program.
In May 2018, the United States withdrew from the agreement and reinstated harsh sanctions against the Islamic Republic. Iran, in turn, announced a phased reduction of its obligations, while European participants considered it necessary to maintain the agreement.
On January 5 of this year, in the context of a worsening relationship with Washington, Tehran announced the abandonment of the “last key limitation in the nuclear deal” regarding the number of centrifuges for uranium enrichment.
Later, official Moscow criticized the call of US President Donald Trump to the signatory countries of the JCPO to withdraw from this agreement.
