Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Jawad Zarif said the US is behaving like the ISIS*, threatening to destroy Iran’s cultural sites, IRNA reported.
Zarif made a corresponding remark in a statement read out by Iran’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Majid Taht-Ravanchi, at a meeting of the UN Security Council, because due to the lack of an American visa, the Iranian Foreign Minister could not attend the meeting in person.
Trump said earlier that the United States took 52 Iranian targets (according to 52 American hostages captured by Iran many years ago), including cultural heritage sites. This tweet caused concern of a number of politicians and experts who indicated that international law prohibits striking at such sites.
The crisis between the US and Iran escalated after the death of Iranian General Kassem Suleimani in Iraq in early January as a result of an American special operation. Iran in response fired missiles at bases in Iraq, where the US military is located. According to Washington, none of the US citizens were injured. Trump said that Washington will use economic sanctions to pressure Iran, and the Iranian side, in turn, promised not to launch new attacks if the Americans do not do it first.
