Germany withdraws its soldiers from Iraq. This is done for security reasons, said German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas.
Part of the German contingent leaves Iraq at least temporarily.
Last night, German Defense Minister Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer and Foreign Minister Heiko Maas informed the Bundestag about the planned withdrawal of troops from the country.
The letter said that the German contingent in Iraq should be “temporarily reduced.” The measures will primarily affect military personnel working in Baghdad and Taji.
After the assassination of the United States by Iranian General Suleymani, the Iraqi parliament voted to ensure that all foreign troops leave the country. German Foreign Minister Maas said: “Of course, we will respect every sovereign decision of the Iraqi government,” the minister writes.
“In principle, we are ready to continue to provide our support within the international framework, if it is demanded by Iraq and the situation has this at its disposal. The soldiers stationed there (in Baghdad and Taji) will soon be moved to Jordan and Kuwait. When the training (of Iraqi soldiers) resumes, they can be returned. ”
