State Duma assessed Trump’s threats to impose sanctions against Iraq

Anton Morozov, a member of the State Duma’s Committee on Foreign Affairs, assessed the consequences of the US sanctions against Iraq in an interview with RT.

Earlier, the US President Donald Trump threatened Iraq to impose such sanctions that “they have never seen before, anti-Iranian sanctions will seem like a trifle” if he takes hostile action against the United States.

“I think this is a traditional American way of influencing the state. But in this situation it is unlikely to work, since the desire to free oneself from American troops is now stronger than some anti-sanction actions”, – Morozov said.

According to him, each state wants to free itself from foreign influence, including the presence of foreign troops on its territory.

“The United States, of course, has destabilized the situation in the Middle East with its antics. And now it’s natural to expect “sudden movements”. Nobody will stand on ceremony with the United States, just like they will not stand on ceremony in their actions in the Middle East”, –  Morozov said.

On the night of January 3, the US military conducted an operation near the international airport in the Iraqi capital against the commander of the Al-Quds special forces, General Kassem Soleimani and the deputy head of the Iraqi Shiite militia, Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis. In Washington, they believe that they were involved in organizing the assault on the American embassy in December 2019.

Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei has warned that Soleimani’s death will not go unanswered. Trump, in turn, promised to deliver a “quick and powerful blow” to 52 targets in Iran in the event of an attack on the Americans.

The international community has called on Washington and Tehran to restrain themselves.
