The Iraqi Parliament’s Security and Defense Committee intends to appeal to the government to file a complaint against the United States with the UN Security Council in the wake of the January 3 assassination of an influential Iranian leader, Kassem Suleimani and one of the Iraqi Shiite commanders, Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, reports the Arab satellite channel Al-Arabiya, citing a statement by a committee representative.
“We will demand from the Iraqi government to file a complaint with the UN Security Council against Washington”, – the TV channel quoted a statement by a member of the Iraqi parliamentary committee.
It is expected that on Sunday the Iraqi parliament will hold a meeting on the presence of the US military in the country. It was previously reported that in connection with recent events, Iraq has already limited US military operations on its territory. The United States also stated that it was cutting back its activities in Iraq, and NATO announced that it was suspending the training program for the Iraqi military. In addition, representatives of the Shiite Iraqi militia, one of whose commanders died as a result of the American attack, promised on Sunday to start attacking the bases used by the Americans in Iraq.
At the same time, media reported that Washington was sending a warship to the Middle East with several thousand foot soldiers to protect American interests in the region.
On the night of January 3, the United States conducted an operation in the area of Baghdad International Airport against Suleymani and the deputy head of the Iraqi Shiite militia al-Muhandis, who in Washington are considered involved in organizing the attack on the US embassy in Baghdad on December 31, 2019.
Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei has promised to avenge the United States for the death of Suleymani. US President Donald Trump, in response, promised to deliver a “quick and powerful blow” to 52 targets in Iran if the Americans were attacked.
