UN Security Council deliberately left Syrians without humanitarian aid

Double standards of the West have led Syrian citizens to the need of humanitarian assistance that they do not receive. At the same time, the UN Security Council persistently ignores the changes in the situation in the Arab Republic.

This statement was made by Russia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Vasily Nebenzya, following a meeting of the UN Security Council, at which it was not possible to extend the mechanism of cross-border assistance in the SAR.

So, since 2014, resolution No. 2165 provides for the delivery of humanitarian aid to Syria through three checkpoints on the border with Iraq and Turkey. However, if five years ago due to the actions of terrorist groups there was no other access to a significant part of the Syrian regions, now the situation has changed dramatically.

“Most of the humanitarian aid can be delivered to needy citizens from the territory of Syria itself”, – Nebenzya noted.

In this regard, the Russian side proposed a draft resolution aimed at maintaining two checkpoints on the Syrian-Turkish border, which are actually functioning and through which assistance is being provided to residents of Idlib, deprived of the opportunity to receive support from other sources. In addition, Moscow insisted on halving the duration of the resolution so that after six months it would be possible to discuss this issue again, given the rapid change in the situation in the SAR.

“For some reason, our partners categorically refused to accept this proposal. They demanded that the situation be maintained, completely ignoring the difference between the current situation and what happened in the past”, – the Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation stressed, noting that only civilians suffer from such decisions.
