SBU announces the detention of one of the key ISIS* leaders

On Friday, the Ukrainian Security Service announced the detention of one of the key leaders of the Islamic State* terrorist organization banned in the Russian Federation*, a Georgian citizen Al Bara Shishani. They detained him in the Kiev region. 

“As a result of a joint special operation of the Security Service of Ukraine with the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia and the US Central Intelligence Agency in the Kiev region, one of the key leaders of the Islamic State terrorist organization was detained”, – the SBU Press service said in a statement.

According to the agency, a Georgian citizen nicknamed Al Bara Shishani was detained, who since 2012 held the post of Amir Jamaat “Akhadun Akhat”, and in 2013 took the post of Deputy Military Amir, known as “Abu Umar Al-Shishani”.

“In the summer of 2018, a terrorist illegally arrived in Ukraine using a fake passport. According to available information, while in Ukraine, the terrorist continued to coordinate the activities of special ISIS* organizations”, – the statement said.

According to the ministry, the portrait examination proved that “the detained foreigner is indeed the wanted leader of the Islamic State*.

“Now the terrorist is under extradition arrest. Information on his involvement in the commission of crimes on the territory of Ukraine is being checked”, – the message said.
