Russian Orthodox Church says Putin will discuss the restoration of Syrian temples in Hungary

As Metropolitan Hilarion, the Head of the Moscow Patriarchate’s Department for External Church Relations, told the reporters on Wednesday, the Russian Orthodox Church expects that during his visit to Hungary, Russian President Vladimir Putin will discuss refugee issues, the rebuilding of Syrian temples and social infrastructure with the Heads of the main Christian denominations in Syria.

On October 30, the Russian Head of state is paying Hungary a working visit at the invitation of the Prime Minister Viktor Orban. Earlier in the Hungarian media there was information that the topic of oppression of Christians in the Middle East would be one of the main issues to discuss. 

“President Putin, while in Hungary, together with the Hungarian Prime Minister on the initiative of the Hungarian leadership will meet the Heads of the main Christian denominations of Syria, including the Patriarch of Antioch and the whole East John, the Patriarch of the Syro-Jacobite Church Ignatius”, – Metropolitan Hilarion said after the Christian Plenary Interfaith Advisory Committee.

According to the representative of the Russian Church, they plan to discuss “the participation of Hungary and Russia in various humanitarian projects aimed at helping refugees and restoring the temples and social infrastructure of Syria”.

On Wednesday, Moscow hosts a meeting of the VI Plenary Session of the KMCC with the participation of representatives of Christian churches from the Baltic countries and the CIS. At the meeting of the committee, Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk (Russian Orthodox Church), Archbishop Pavel Pezzi (Roman Catholic Church) and Archbishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Russia Dietrich Brower speak on the chair of the Department for External Church Relations of the Moscow Patriarchate.
