At least two people were injured during the shooting at a mosque in Bayonne in southern France. According to local publications, an elderly man opened fire on parishioners on the street and threw a Molotov cocktail into the building, after which he fled the scene. Subsequently, the attacker was detained in his house about a hundred kilometers from Bayonne, the police said.
Reuters, citing its sources, notes that the suspect is an 84-year-old supporter of the right-wing National Union party, led by Marine Le Pen. The party leader has already condemned the attack.
“This act contradicts all the values for which our movement is fighting”, – Le Pen wrote on Twitter, calling for the most severe treatment of the punishment for this crime.
L’attentat commis contre la mosquée de #Bayonne est un acte inqualifiable absolument contraire à toutes les valeurs portées par notre mouvement. Ces crimes doivent être traités avec la sévérité la plus totale. MLP
