On Thursday, October 23, near the UN headquarters for refugees in Geneva, the Syrian Kurd attempted a self-immolation act, Swissinfo agency reports.
The 31-year-old migrant previously lived in Germany. In the morning, he went to the UN headquarters building and doused himself with gasoline, and then set fire to it. At this time, UN headquarters staff were just going to work.
Law enforcement officers, doctors and rescuers immediately arrived at the scene. The man with the burns was carried out on a stretcher and hospitalized in a local clinic by helicopter.
He was taken from Place de la Nations in front of the UN Headquarters to the University Hospital Lausanne (CHUV), which specializes in the treatment of burns.
“I heard screams and groans constantly repeating, then I saw that something was happening outside the UNHCR building. There were a lot of police cars, ambulances and firemen. Later I saw a man who was being carried out on the stretcher”, – said the local.
The motives of the Kurd are still unclear.
We recall that recently in the village of Antonovka near Kherson, a 60-year-old man committed suicide by committing an act of self-immolation.
It was also reported that in Kiev near the building of the Ministry of Defense on Vozdukhoflotsky Prospekt, a volunteer doused himself with a combustible substance and set fire to it.
