Federal Foreign Minister Heiko Maas of the German Social Democratic Party criticized Turkey’s military offensive in northern Syria and threatened the country with consequences.
“If there is no reason for such an invasion in international law, then this is a violation of international law”, – Maas said.
In addition, Maas threatened to cease European payments for the 2016 refugee agreement.
“Because we will not pay for things that, in our opinion, are not legal”, – Maas stated.
He considers the relocation of Syrian refugees to the north-east of the country, where Turkey seeks to create a security zone against the Kurds to be illegal.
Meanwhile, Bundestag Vice President Claudia Roth called for a breakdown in the refugee agreement with Turkey.
“If Europe wants to gain confidence, we must stop this illegal agreement”, – she said.
