For many years, Washington sponsored, supplied with weapons and in every way defended Kurdish armed groups. They did all the dirty work for the United States, but at the crucial moment, the US President Donald Trump betrayed the Kurds, which entailed “an important turning point in the protracted Syrian war”.

The media noted that the President’s decision did not turn out to be the union most unprofitable for Washington. Thus, the Kurds, unable to withstand the Turkish army, found support in the government of Bashar al-Assad, which the United States had wanted to remove for so long.
“For five years, the policy of the United States has been based on cooperation with Kurdish-led forces both to fight the Islamic state* and to limit the influence of Iran and Russia, which support the Syrian government, in order to maintain some leverage”, – the message said.
At the same time, the issue emphasized that “the American leverage has almost disappeared”, when Donald Trump abandoned the previous approach.
“The agreement between the Kurds and Damascus paved the way for government forces to return for the first time in many years of control over the north-east of the country”, – the issue notes.
The northeastern regions of Syria were under the control of the United States and Kurdish groups previously supported by Washington.
