Czech Republic: Anti-government protests call for justice minister’s resignation

Tens of thousands of people demonstrated in Prague on Tuesday demanding the resignation of prime minister Andrej Babis and justice minister Marie Benesova. It was the fourth rally in a month organised by the group Million Moments for Democracy. Actors, lawyers, musicians, hockey stars and veteran political dissidents join the protest.

“Mr Prime Minister, we urge you to stop ignoring and making fun of our demands and arguments”, Mikulas Minar, the group’s leader told demonstrators from stage.

They are angry at the decision of Czech prime minister to appoint the new justice minister who earlier said she could stop an investigation against him. In April, police said that Babis and other officials should stand trial for alleged fraud involving the handling of an EU subsidy.
