Putin signs Russian Internet law

Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed the law on providing a stable operation of the Russian Internet in case it is disconnected from the global infrastructure of the World Wide Web. The document was published on Wednesday on the official web portal of legal information.

The law, signed on Wednesday, requires internet providers to install equipment to route Russian internet traffic through servers in the country. Proponents said it is a defence measure in case the United States or other hostile powers cut off internet access for Russians.
