Germany: Berlin to maintain restrictive arms policy despite French criticism

Germany will maintain a “restrictive and responsible” arms exports policy, Government Spokesperson Steffen Seibert stated at a weekly federal press conference in Berlin, Wednesday.

Seibert’s comments came one day after the French Ambassador to Germany, Anne-Marie Descotes, sharply criticised the German arms export policy as unpredictable and demanded export guarantees for joint arms projects between the two nations.

Though Seibert declined to comment specifically about Descotes’ statement, he added, “We know that there is an issue to resolve between Germany and France and it is part of the treaty of Aachen.”

Commenting on Nord Stream 2, a plan for a natural gas pipeline between Russia and Germany, he stated Germany needs clarity in terms of Ukraine’s role as transit country for natural gas deliveries to Europe.
