Russian President Vladimir Putin met with the members of the Security Council of Russia in Moscow on Friday to discuss the political situation in Venezuela.
On Thursday, Presiden’t Putin pledged support to Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro during the crisis caused by “destructive external interference that grossly violates the most basic norms of the international law.”
The agenda of the meeting also reportedly included Syria as well as the results of Putin’s recent talks with his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan and with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.
On Wednesday, the Venezuela’s opposition leader Juan Guaido declared himself interim president as thousands took to the streets calling for resignation of the current head of the state Nicolas Maduro.
Within 24 hours, a number of countries, including the United States, recognised Guaido’s presidency, prompting Maduro to cut diplomatic ties with Washington and give American diplomats 72 hours to leave the country.
