Peskov: ‘no Plans’ for Putin to Attend Munch 2019 Conference

MOSCOW, January 24. /TASS/. Russian President Vladimir Putin does not plan to take part in the Munich Security Conference this year, Presidential Spokesman Dmitry Peskov has told reporters.

“No, the president’s participation in the Munich conference is not planned this year,” he said.

The conference will be held on February 15-17. The forum’s chairman Wolfgang Ischinger earlier said that Europe’s self-determination and relations with the US as part of Transatlantic Cooperation would be among the key issues on the agenda.

Russia has taken part in the forum since the late 1990s. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has led the Russian delegation since 2010, with the exception of 2016 when Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev took part in the conference. In his speech, he raised the issue of relations between Russia and NATO.

Russian President Vladimir Putin took part in the 43rd Munich Conference in 2007, delivering a headline-making speech, in which he criticized the policies pursued by the US and NATO, in particular, the alliance’s expansion and plans to deploy the US defense missile system in the Czech Republic and Poland and NATO’s military bases in Romania and Bulgaria.
