France: Loud explosion rocks central Paris, injuries reported

Several people have been injured in a loud explosion at a bakery in central Paris believed to be caused by a gas leak, according to police.

Among the 20 injured, two are in a critical condition and seven are seriously wounded, a police source told the France 3 TV.

The explosion went off at around 9 am local on the Rue de Trevise, in the 9th arrondissement, north-central Paris.

The explosion came amid hightened security in the city for yellow vest demonstrations expected later on Saturday, with large parts of the city centre blocked off by riot police.

Firemen are still working to clear the site of the explosion.
