French PM Edouard Philippe has announced 32 new “measures” in a latest attempt to curb extremist violence that has led to over 300 deaths in the last three years.
In particular, France will broaden scope of anti-terrorism powers, including easing of domestic surveillance restrictions, prison social systems designed to identify radicalized inmates and tracking of Islamic extremists at large.
The plan includes a proposal to create a new terrorism prosecution office and uniting counterterrorism effort under DGSI domestic intelligence agency.
During a press-release held this Friday, French Prime Minister Philippe has stressed that the “common terrorist is no longer remote controlled by cells located in Syria” as “the new face of terrorist is a psychologically fragile man, self-radicalized or indoctrinated in prisons”.
“The threat has evolved and we need to adapt ourselves” the minister added.
More than 200 people have been killed in extremist attacks in France in recent years.
