German Chancellor Angela Merkel and her French counterpart Emmanuel Macron both condemned Russia for the ‘attempted murder’ of former spy Sergei Skripal during a joint press conference in Paris on Friday.
Macron talked for both France and Germany as he expressed their solidarity with the UK regarding the attack which occurred on British soil and went on to say that: “We condemn this Russian act for what has happened, because everything suggests that it was Russia that led this attempted murder.”
On her part Chancellor Merkel expressed her “unity” with Britain and said that there are “many hints” that point to Russia’s involvement.
She also talked about improving the refugee common policy and to step up the protection of the borders.
“We will work on the bilateral relationship with great engagement. The Elysee agreement should be rewritten this year,” Merkel said re-affirming Macron’s stance on a new treaty which the pair announced a renewed Elysee Treaty.
