Hungarian vice-PM announced the right to autonomy of the Transcarpathian community

Hungarian Vice-Premier Zsolt Šemien stated that ethnic Hungarians abroad have the right to autonomy and Hungarian citizenship. Earlier, Prime Minister Orban spoke on the problem of Ukrainian-Hungarian relations, devoting a significant part of his speech to Ukraine at a meeting with foreign Hungarians.

“Hungarian citizenship for Transcarpathians is not only an emotional issue, but also an existential one, because it allows you to move around the world freely.” The government seeks that after hundreds of years of repression from “Trianon”, people feel the benefits of being a citizen of Hungary,” said Šemien in an interview with Fidesz agency.

He added that the Hungarian government is responsible for all foreign Hungarians, including by granting citizenship.

He also recalled that the Hungarian government supports the entire institutional system in Transcarpathia. This concerns material assistance to doctors, teachers, provision of free meals for young children, and the delivery of vaccines.
