Russia imposed retaliatory sanctions against Canada

The Russian authorities decided to impose a ban on the entry of a number of Canadian figures into the country in response to the introduction of new anti-Russian sanctions by the Canadian leadership, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on Friday.

As notes the Foreign Ministry official, “the question arises: is this what was sought in Ottawa, do they really think that Russia can be “pressed”? “Or are they merely amusing their political ambitions?”

Previously, the Canadian authorities imposed personal sanctions against 52 foreigners, including 30 Russian citizens, who, in Ottawa’s opinion, are involved in human rights or corruption. All assets of these people are frozen, and they themselves are banned from entering Canada.

Sanctions were introduced in accordance with the recently adopted in Canada “the law on victims of corrupt foreign governments,” which is called the local analogue of the American “Magnitsky Act”. RRestrictions have touched those Russians connected with the death of the Hermitage Capital fund employee, Sergei Magnitsky.
