Nationalist detained in attempted assassination of France’s Macron

The French authorities have charged a “nationalist” who claimed he planned to kill President Emmanuel Macron with individual terrorism, the BFM TV channel reported.

According to the TV channel, the defendant who shared the ultra-right ideology, in a chat on one of the gaming sites, said he wanted to buy a Kalashnikov assault rifle for the attack, which was to take place on July 14 on the Champs-Elysees during a national parade timed to the day of the Bastille.

It is reported that the 23-year-old unemployed lived in the suburb of Paris to the commune of Argenteuil. When arrested, on Saturday, July 1, he threatened police with a kitchen knife.

In 2016, the alleged attacker was already convicted of justifying terrorism.
