Lavrov to visit Budapest on Wednesday

“Bilateral ties and international issues” including Russia’s relations with NATO and the EU will be on the agenda of a working visit by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov to Budapest. The Russian ministry said Lavrov will meet PM Viktor Orbán and his counterpart Péter Szijjártó on Wednesday. The sides will discuss the “current state of affairs and outlook” of bilateral relations and will “mark out future steps necessary to maintain and strengthen mutually beneficial economic cooperation under the conditions of the ‘sanctions war’ forcefully implemented by the United States and the EU”. The sides will review the planned Paks nuclear power station expansion project with the involvement of Russia’s state-owned Rosatom.

The situation in Ukraine, the fight against international terrorism in Syria and Iraq, Russia’s relations with the EU and NATO and the issues of European migration will also be discussed. “Russian-Hungarian foreign policy dialogue is characterised by a significant level of mutual understanding, and this rests on identical or similar approaches demonstrated by Moscow and Budapest in relation to some of the acutest issues”, the Russian ministry said, noting that top-level visits have been regular in the recent period.
