The Syrian Armed Forces, backed by the fearless Deserts Hawks commandos and highly-trained Marines, launched, today early morning, a counter offensive to recapture several hills and points in northern Latakia.
The wide-scale offensive began with the daybreak by firing barrages of rockets at the jihadis-held areas around the strategic town of Kabani, successfully recapturing al-Zwaykay mount and Hill 1112.
Kabani bears a strategic importance since it serves as the Islamist rebels’ main supply route from Turkey, and the ‘gate’ for Jisr al-Shughour in Idlib countryside; a town held by the Turkish backed Jaysh al-Fateh since more than a year.
Yesterday, a conglomeration of hardline militants including al-Qaeda franchise in Syria, Jabhet al-Nusra, and the Islamic Turkistan Party, blitzed the area and seized several positions from the government troops.
The surprise attack by Islamist militants comes in response to an explicit call made by Mohamed Alloush, chief negotiator of the Syrian opposition delegation to Geneva peace talks, and other delegation members to break the US-Russia brokered ceasefire with the Syrian Army.
